Firewatch

100 Mile House RCMP and the North District RCMP are investigating a house fire that occurred just south of 100 Mile House in the early morning hours of September 7th, 2009.

The RCMP received a complaint that a house was on fire in Lone Butte, south of 100 Mile House on Highway 24 at approximately 3:45am on September 7th. When the RCMP arrived, the Lone Butte Volunteer Fire Department was already on the scene and the residence was fully engulfed in flames. The 100 Mile House Fire Department also attended the scene to assist. Investigators quickly learned that a female, age 62, did not make it out of the residence prior to it becoming engulfed in flames. Despite the best efforts of fire crews, the female could not be saved from the intense fire which also completely destroyed the residence.

The deceased was later identified as long time 100 Mile House resident, Arja Tulikki Bird.  The 52 year old male who did manage to get out of the residence, suffered 2nd degree burns and is currently in hospital in Vancouver receiving treatment for his burn injuries.

The 100 Mile House RCMP and North District RCMP are awaiting a final report from a Fire Investigator with the E-Division Criminal Unit for his opinion on the cause of the fire.  Investigators have no reason to believe that the fire is suspicious.

The RCMP would like to send condolences to the family of the victim.

The RCMP would also like to thank all emergency personnel for their efforts in relation to this fire.
