Most BC woodlot licensees probably don’t know it, but an example of their work was on display - front and centre in fact - when Alex Bilodeau won Canada’s first gold medal on home soil on February 14.

PostHeaderIcon Each 2010 podium tells a unique B.C. story

Each of the 23 stunning wood podiums used at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games tells a unique story of the people and communities of British Columbia.

The podiums are built from 18 distinct wood types, and the wood for each podium was harvested and donated from a specific area in the province. Donors include family run woodlots, First Nations, communities, small business and world leaders in sustainable forest products.

As the media spotlight shines on the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, a government-industry promotion is hiding the risks of investing in BC's mining industry, First Nations Women Advocating Responsible Mining warned today.

"Crucial facts are being hidden and the global media attention generated by the Olympics is being used to send a false message that BC is a sure gold medal bet for mining investors," said FNWARM member Chief Marilyn Baptise of the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation.

PostHeaderIcon Minivan and tractor-trailer collide near Lac La Hache

RCMPshield_crest2On January 26, 2010 at approximately 5:15pm a collision occurred on Highway 97 just north of Lac La Hache at Clancy's Restaurant between a mini van and a semi truck. The Lac La Hache Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service and the 100 Mile House RCMP Traffic Services unit responded to the collision.

The two occupants of the minivan were rushed to the 100 Mile House hospital with serious, but non life threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi truck was taken to the Williams Lake hospital with minor injuries and later released.

The 100 Mile House RCM Traffic Services Unit's investigation into the crash indicated that the minivan pulled out of Clancy's gas station and turned southbound in front of a north bound semi truck. The matter is still under investigation.

“I don’t think we’re getting overly excited about the announcement that the province has approved of the Prosperity project,” stated Anahim Chief Joe Alphonse. “Right from the get-go we knew that this would be the province’s position. I think the provincial review is a waste of time and energy—an absolute farce. We have no confidence in their process: it’s a rubber stamp for industry and they’ve lived up to the billing.

2010 has started out to be a year of potential with news of mining, energy and forestry investments. The 7th annual Natural Resource Forum this past week heard from lead industry investors such as Ken Shields (CEO Conifex), Don Roberts (CIBC World Markets), Pierre Lebel (CEO Imperial Metals),  Don Steele (Pacific Bioenergy) Fred Spinola (GM Del Tech), Greg Stewart (President Sinclar Group) and Craig Lodge (Pinnacle Pellet) all of whom are looking at 2010 as a year to invest and grow their businesses. This does not include the significant investments ($100 million plus) Canfor Pulp plans to make. All in all the Forum brought a sense of optimism to the air that was much needed.

PostHeaderIcon Arrests made in Quesnel Internet fraud case

RCMPshield_crest2After a lengthy criminal code investigation, twelve counts of Fraud Under $5,000 have been sworn against both Karin Leeanna Adams and Charles Bruce Kirkbride of Quesnel, BC.

Adams and Kirk were the subjects of a complaint involving internet based scams which occurred between October of 2008 and September of 2009. The charges involved fraudulent transactions involving the sales of dogs and horses via the Internet.

Shopping on the Internet can be safe and convenient, however, purchasers must be cautious about purchasing unseen items. For information on known scams, visit the RCMP website, www.phonebusters.com or the Better Business Bureau.

Adams and Kirk were arrested on unendorsed warrants for the offences and are to appear in court on January 12, 2010.

010710Snowmobile clubs in the Thompson, Kootenay and Cariboo regions of British Columbia have signed stewardship management agreements with the Province that will support the recovery of the mountain caribou population, announced Environment Minister Barry Penner.

"The new agreements give snowmobiling enthusiasts access to some beautiful mountain terrain for winter recreation yet provide protection to mountain caribou and their habitat," said Penner. "We have worked in partnership with snowmobile associations to strike a balance to ensure mountain caribou have the space they need."

“These 10 communities have shown their healthy living and Olympic spirit in ways that have really resonated with British Columbians,” said McNeil. “Congratulations to all the communities that entered the contest for demonstrating their excitement and enthusiasm for the 2010 Games, and their commitment to a healthier, more environmentally sustainable lifestyle.”

The top 10 communities are: Houston, Princeton, Smithers, Quesnel, Salmon Arm, Dawson Creek, Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna and Coquitlam.

Two marijuana grow operations found by Police near Little FortOn December 27, Clearwater RCMP officers executed a search warrant on a residence in Little Fort. Once inside officers found 167 marihuana plants in various stages.

Electricity was being stolen by way of a hydro by-pass, which is not only illegal, but a safety hazard to those in the house and the surrounding area as well.  BC Hydro crews attended the scene and disconnected the power due to safety concerns.
