122309_lloyd_robertsonThe recession that ravaged the Canadian economy populated much of CTV News' top 10 list of news stories for 2009.

The annual list was selected by a panel of Canadian journalists.

The panel was led by veteran CTV News Chief Anchor and Senior Editor Lloyd Robertson (pictured here).

According to CTV News President Robert Hurst, speaking Monday, December 21, on Canada AM, "the deep impact of the global financial collapse felt by Canadians from coast to coast put the recession on top of this year's list."

The economic crisis was the leading Canadian news story in 2008 as well. But there was some competition for top spot this year, according to the CTV.CA News Staff report, with the Swine flu scare seeming to dominate newscasts and newspaper headlines across the country in the latter half of the year.

Beginning December 23, CTV National News will feature in-depth reports on each of the top 10 Canadian news stories, each night leading up to New Year's Day. The stories will be re-broadcast on CTV News Channel the following day.

The complete list of CTV's Top 10 Canadian News Stories for 2009 (with air dates for in-depth reports in brackets):
