School districts in B.C. will receive an $84-million increase to operating funding for 2009-10, while enrolment continues to decline.
Operating Funding
· Operating funding to school districts in 2009-10 is $4.551 billion – an $84-million increase over 2008-09.
· Since 2000-01, the Province has increased funding to B.C. public schools by close to $1.3 billion: $873 million in operating funding and $407 million in one-time grants.
· For the ninth consecutive year, average per-pupil funding has increased. In 2009-10 the Province is delivering $8,318 in average per-pupil funding – the highest ever – a $200 increase over 2008-09 and a $2,102 increase since 2000-01.
· $53.6 million ($1,014 per student) per year in supplemental funding for Aboriginal education in 2009-10.
· Total funding for students with special needs is now nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars each year.
· The Province is providing nearly $9 million to help 36 school districts that have experienced at least a one per cent decline in enrolment.
· Operating grant funding also includes $15.4 million for 44,375 students who took summer learning courses in 2009.
Enrolment
· School districts have reported 541,917 full-time equivalent public school students for the 2009-10 school year – a decline of 3,350 students from 2008-09.
· Since 2000-01, enrolment has declined by more than 56,000 students across British Columbia.
· This is the 12th consecutive year that student enrolment has decreased in B.C., with only 16 school districts reporting more students in 2009-10.
· 52,885 full-time Aboriginal students for 2009-10 – 1,032 more than in 2008-09.
· 57,797 full-time English-as-a-Second-Language students for 2009-10 – 139 more than in 2008-09.
· 23,347 full-time students with special needs for 2009-10 – 1,152 more than in 2008-09.
· 7,585 full-time adult students for 2009-10 – 479 fewer than in 2008-09.
