Pets not always purrfect gifts
| Human interest |
When thinking of giving a pet as a gift at Christmas or any other time of the year, the B.C. S.P.C.A. advises that people think very carefully.
"The holiday season is a hectic and exciting time of year and a new animal is very likely already experiencing some stress from the move," says the animal protection society on their website at .
"A gift animal can easily become neglected amidst all the excitement of the holidays. Animals - especially puppies and kittens - need special care and attention when moved to a new environment and, unfortunately and unintentionally, during the holiday season pets can be quickly forgotten among the new toys and games."
Caring for a pet requires a long-term commitment and the S.P.C.A. suggests that the whole family be consulted when considering a pet.
They also note that most adults prefer to choose their own pet to match their lifestyle and personality.
A better idea could be to provide your own "gift certificate" to cover the cost of the adoption of a new family pet of their choice from the local S.P.C.A. That way, after the holidays, when everything has calmed down, the new pet can be selected carefully and given the attention he or she needs and deserves.
The 100 Mile House & District Branch of the S.P.C.A. is staffed entirely with volunteers. They do not have a shelter location and all of the animals available for adoption are housed at foster homes. Arrangements can be made for viewing animals by calling (250) 395-5303.
The Williams Lake & District Branch shelter is located at 709 Bond Lake Road, off Highway 20 in Williams Lake. They are open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and can be reached by calling (250) 392-2179.
Both branches can also be accessed online at http://www.spca.bc.ca/.
