PostHeaderIcon Colour forecast for 2010 reflects “new beginnings”

Local

Give a single wall a new coat of colour and it's one of the simplest, most economic and effective makeovers. Splurge and paint a whole room or try a decorative technique. Nothing compares.Green is looking to be the “it” colour of 2010, reflecting a new decade and, perhaps, new beginnings.

“Green has such meaning and symbolism,” said Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour expert. “It represents renewal, and is eternally the colour of spring and new growth. In recent years, it has become the emblem of the environment, shorthand for the global movement that's dedicated to preserving and conserving our planet.

PostHeaderIcon A look at child poverty in British Columbia

Miscellaneous

011210-fight_povertyThis is the first in a series of monthly reports by First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition on child poverty in British Columbia. The series is a continuing call to the BC government to start getting serious about fighting child and family poverty.

The provincial government has spent the last several years trying to explain away the poverty statistics. The latest shots came on November 24 on the government web site. (www.gov.bc.ca/fortherecord/childpoverty/cp_poverty.html)

A Cariboo Moment

By Vic Green

I was watching the clouds roll by on a lazy after noon.  The lake had froze just a few days ago, when guess what happened?   A big ol' cloud came by, some of my tree branches grabbed it and held it tight.  Not to worry - they only held it for a few minutes then let it loose.

PostHeaderIcon Winter sports safety tips from BC Children’s Hospital

Personal safety

120409_wintersportsWinter sports can be a fun way for children and youth to stay active. However, if not enjoyed carefully, these activities can cause serious injuries resulting from falling, slipping, or crashing into other objects or people. It is important for parents to know how common injuries can be prevented.

“At BC Children’s, we see a number of kids in Emergency as a result of injuries from winter sports. The most common injuries we treat are related to fractures, concussions, and sprains,” says Dr. Ran Goldman, Medical Director of Emergency at BC Children’s Hospital, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority.
