Health and Fitness

The statistics are sobering.

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, 215 Canadians died while waiting for a donated organ in 2008, while more than 4300 waited for a life-saving transplant. During the same year, only 2,083 individuals benefitted from an organ transplant. The Canadian Organ Replacement Register indicates that three-quarters of those patients waiting for a transplant need a kidney.

The solution is relatively simple. Organ donation saves lives. Signing your donor card is quick and easy, yet the repercussions last a lifetime.

To make a difference in someone's life, sign your organ donor card today. Once you've made this decision, there are a couple of things you need to do:

• Tell your family that you have decided to donate your organs. They need to be told sooner rather than later so that they honour your commitment.

• You should register as an organ donor. Most provinces post their organ and tissue registration form online. You can also download an organ donor card at organdonations.ca.

• Make sure your Donor ID Card is signed and is kept with the rest of your personal identification at all times.

• Give the Donor Notification Card to all your loved ones. www.newscanada.com
