Firewatch

081710_another_smoky_dayThe Fire Centre reported extremely aggressive fire activity in the last 24 hours with another challenging day expected today.

The Fire Centre stated that the weather is the biggest challenge facing fire fighting efforts. The cold, dry front forecast for tomorrow is quite ominous for fire fighters. Cooler temperatures are not enough---extreme winds are expected to start this afternoon and through Thursday, and fire fighters may have to be pulled.

Fire #C50300 outside of Tweedsmuir Park took a 6km run to the east yesterday---the fire is ranked at a 5-6, with 6 being the highest rank. A 6-ranking fire is as active as a fire gets: described as a ‘blow-up’ or ‘conflagration’.

There are currently 2,000 fire fighters in the area, and it is reported that smoke will increasingly affect air quality. It was also stated that although the endeavor is made to get people back to their homes and work places as soon as possible, safety always comes first.

There is a risk of lightning west of the Fraser River beginning this afternoon.

In the Meldrum fire complex, fires behaved fairly well yesterday, according to the Fire Centre. Fires didn’t show vigorous activity, and fires in the eastern section of the complex were contained well, within fire guards. Aircraft was restricted yesterday because of poor visibility. Smoke is, and will continue to be an issue, and people are cautioned to be careful while traveling.

In the Bull Canyon complex, crews conducted some burn-off operations yesterday, with the main fire 100% contained.

The fire area east of Alexis Creek is in mop-up stage. Today crews are working on the eastern flank northwest of Alexis Creek, and more burn-off operations will be conducted if the weather permits.

Road 7000 is closed today, as is Anaham Lake Road, and Alexis Lake Road requires a permit.

In the Dog Creek complex there is no significant growth and crews were able to conduct some burn-off as a result of favourable weather and will try again today. The fire is reported at 85% contained.

Extreme fire behaviour was observed in the Pelican Lake complex yesterday. Structural protection is a priority and visibility is extremely poor. The fire has approached the Black Water bridge. There are 250 fire fighters on the fire, as well as 53 pieces of equipment including excavators, dozers, graders, 15 helicopters and two air tankers. Another challenging day is expected today, with hot, sunny weather, winds and thunderstorms.

Emergency Services is open in Quesnel, with some evacuees on site and more expected today. There are 39 residences under evacuation order and 10 under alert.

There is no containment reported on the Tweedsmuir Park fire, which is at 1,800 hectares. Residents in the Bella Coola Valley are affected by the closure of Highway 20 at Heckman Pass, but there are no evacuation orders.North of Bella Coola, there are evacuation alerts and orders in two seasonal fishing resorts on the Dean River.

The fire at Tsacha Lake is very aggressive, and is ranked 5-6 on the fire scale. Last night an abandoned lodge was burned---there were no occupants.
