Firewatch

ALEXIS CREEK, BC – Although wind at the Lava Canyon wildfire increased to 40 kilometres an hour yesterday, the guards along the fire edge were not compromised.

Helicopters bucketed hot spots along the northeast flanks of the fire to ensure that the fire didn’t have enough momentum to spot over the fireguards in place. Crews were able to burn off pockets of fuel in the morning while the weather conditions were appropriate.

The fire is currently 100 percent guarded and 90 percent contained. Today crews will continue to strengthen containment lines and will burn off fuel whenever possible on the northern portion of the fire. On areas where the fire activity is calm, crews are patrolling the fire perimeter and extinguishing hot spots.

The Evacuation Alert is still in place. Please contact the Cariboo Regional District at 250-392-4283. Structure protection is still in place within the Evacuation Alert area. The units are in place along the Bayliff Road and further west along Highway 20.

Resources on the Lava Canyon Fire today consist of 281 firefighters, 9 helicopters, 21 pieces of heavy equipment, and 38 support staff.

For updates on fires of note or open burning restrictions, please call 1-888-3FOREST or visit the B.C. Wildfire Management program website at www.bcwildfire.ca.
