This Saturday, October 17th, Wilma Boyce will be at the South Cariboo Rec Centre selling sandbags on behalf of 100 Mile Midget Reps hockey. You can pick up your sandbags between 2pm and 3:15pm and then enjoy the hockey game!

Now that winter has reared its head, everyone that lives in this area should know how important a safe and properly winterized vehicle is.

It was amazing. It was beautiful. Standing in a field at the EasyGo Ranch in Lac La Hache on a gorgeous afternoon, Bev Day and husband Ralph Smith released the eagle that had been found wounded and dazed on the side of the highway last August.

Its powerful wings gracefully spread, the eagle soared over the property and circled overhead while the crowd smiled and cheered, many with tears in their eyes.

PostHeaderIcon White Cane safety day October 15th

Local

The ability to travel safely and independently is a critical issue to everyone in our society. We all want to get to our destinations in the safest and quickest way possible. This is no different for persons who are blind or partially sighted. While new technologies are emerging that harness global positioning systems linked to speech enabled mobile phones to enable navigation of foreign cities, such technology is not universally suitable, available, or affordable, and for most blind and partially sighted people the white cane remains the essential mobility aid.

The white cane is also acknowledged as a symbol representing blindness and mobility and is used by blind and partially sighted people across the world. Guide dogs are also used in some countries.

As we celebrate White Cane Day on October 15th, the World Bind Union, representing some 160 Million blind and partially sighted people worldwide, is concerned that some present day innovations are threatening the safe and independent travel of blind and partially sighted people.

PostHeaderIcon Turkey pledges for the Food Bank

Local

By Bev Boyle

The 100 Mile Food Bank is looking forward to the much-needed donations that will be contributed through CKBX The Wolf's Annual Turkey Day. The Food Bank has had a substantial increase in the number of people and families that it helps to feed throughout the year and this Christmas is the first in many years that there is no help from government grants for the outlet. Food Bank manager Bob Hicks says, “We have applied for the grant, as usual, but have heard nothing at this point.”

Food Bank director Larry Rode, from The Wolf's Rode Show, explains that, “This year, donations are crucial. Without the grant, it is up to the people in 100 Mile to help the less fortunate in our community.”

The radio station started taking $25 pledges for Turkey Day (the date will be announced in late November) and between 9am and 11am, 40 'turkeys' had been donated. The goal is 400 turkeys but, after the final tally, the numbers have been known to reach 500 and more.

The turkey donations will be used for Christmas Hampers, which will be distributed at the 100 Mile Food Bank before the holidays. Santa Claus himself will be there and the hampers will include toys for kids, sundries, dairy products, bread, meat, and warm clothing. There is a special need for gifts for teens between 15 and 18. People are being told that on Distribution Day, anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be welcome at the food bank.

Larry would like to thank the incredible support of this year's Toy Run and the Tim Hortons Smile Cookies campaign that ends today. All members of the community are urged to participate in the annual Turkey Day and many businesses are challenging other businesses to match or beat their donations.

Sparky the Fire Dog greeted people as they came to the 108 Fire Hall.By Bev Boyle

The mouth-watering smell of barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs wafted through the chilly air as the CRD 108 Volunteer Fire Department held their Community BBQ and Open House on October 3rd.

Families bopped to the sounds of live band 333, as they checked out the children's fire safety house and fire safety information. The star of the show, however, was the sparkling new fire truck the 108 VFD received last week.

108 Ranch Fire Chief Marcel Ried proudly stands in front of the VFD's new fire truck.

Great entertainment was provided by the group 333.
