Knowledge is serving up a feast of seasonal delights that will warm viewers’ hearts and fill their homes with music. From classic Victorian Christmas tales; to a quirky documentary on Santa Claus in the modern world; to music from around the world, there’s something that will satisfy everyone’s appetite.
Knowledge’s holiday highlights include:
Storyville, Knowledge’s destination for creative documentaries, presents Men in Red Suits: The Secret History of Santa Claus, December 22 at 9 pm. This documentary goes beyond asking ‘is there really a Santa?’ to ask ‘what is Santa, really?’ Is jolly St. Nick a Christian saint or a pagan deity? A toy salesman, soft drink spokesman or a mystical being who fulfills children’s dreams?
It turns out the answer is as diverse as the thousands of men who every year put on red suits, stuff pillows under their belts and transform themselves into Santa Claus. This thought‐provoking documentary explores the commercialization of Christmas, Santa’ relation to faith and his role in popular culture.
Radio City, Knowledge’s performing arts documentary strand, has a special gift for viewers this holiday season, with dazzling dance and music specials:
Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker, December 16 at 9 pm—Viewers will be entranced by Matthew Bourne’s witty and colourful take on this traditional Christmas ballet. With Tchaikovsky’s magical score at its heart, Bourne’s interpretation moves the setting to an orphanage in Dickensian London, bringing in new characters and spectacular dance scenes guaranteed to fascinate even those who aren’t usually ballet fans.
Christmas in Vienna 2005, December 23 at 9 pm—A classical Christmas concert at the Vienna Konzertkaus with performances by the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the Arnold Schonberg Choir and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna. In addition to traditional and seasonal favorites, the concert includes a tribute to Mozart in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of his birth and a tour of some of Vienna’s most beautiful historic sites.
An Indigo Christmas, December 23 at 10 pm—Join the renowned Nathaniel Dett Chorale in a rousing concert featuring a range of Christmas songs, from traditional African spirituals to gospel to jazz. Filmed at the Church of St. George the Martyr in Toronto with special guests: award‐winning jazz pianist Joe Sealy and the legendary jazz and gospel singer Jackie Richardson.
