Governments fund local infrastructure
WILLIAMS LAKE, BC - Federal, provincial and the local governments of Williams Lake and 108 Mile have approved a joint investment of $13,010,000 through the Building Canada Fund and Infrastructure Stimulus Fund to get shovels in the ground on three local projects. These projects will benefit local residents by creating jobs, helping to boost the local economy, and build longer-lasting local infrastructure.
"Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, we are moving in record time in partnership with other levels of government to ensure construction begins, jobs are created and we get back on our feet again," says Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod.
"This is a multi-pronged good news story," says Cariboo-Prince George MP Dick Harris, and BC/Yukon Caucus Chair. "These crucial upgrades are a huge boost for the interior, great for the province and meet the infrastructure needs of business, industry, the economy and a growing population."
"This investment in water and transportation infrastructure upgrades is great news for our region," says Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett. "I am pleased to see the federal government support the long-term development of important services as well as much needed job creation in our communities."
"This is great news for Williams Lake," says Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook. "Thank you to MP Dick Harris, MLA Donna Barnett, and city staff. I am looking forward to these improvements to one of our main roadways."
The combined Federal, Provincial, and Municipal funds for infrastructure projects are as follows:
* Williams Lake - $10,500,000 to resurface the entire length of MacKenzie Avenue. The road is subject to heavy truck traffic, so prior to resurfacing, an extensive assessment of the surface and subsurface conditions will be conducted to determine the specific paving treatment, improving the long-term cost-effectiveness of the project. * 108 Mile - $1,101,000 for water quality improvements with the construction of two new reservoirs and the decommissioning of an older reservoir. This project will conserve water, provide additional capacity for future growth and benefit approximately 3,000 people. * Williams Lake - $1,409,000 for a Federal/Provincial Capital Project for an upgrade to the Williams Lake Air Tanker Base at the Williams Lake Airport to improve the Province's ability to fight forest fires. Capacity at the base is being increased to allow two aircraft to be loaded with fire retardant at the same time. The existing loading bay's pavement will also be upgraded to the standard of the new bay.
The Government of Canada's 2009 Economic Action Plan includes a vast array of initiatives to help stimulate the economy, create jobs, build consumer confidence, and assist Canadians when they need it most during this global economic recession. New large-scale infrastructure programs are one important element of this plan.
The project is funded under the Province's three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program that will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build vital public infrastructure in every region of B.C.Since February about 480 projects worth $3.4 billion have been announced. These will create an estimated 21,600 jobs in communities across British Columbia. For more information on the Building Canada plan, visit www.buildingcanada.gc.ca orwww.bcbuildingcanadafundcommunities.ca.
