A unique opportunity for young people in the Cariboo Chilcotin
By LeRae Haynes
A unique opportunity has opened up for young people in the Cariboo Chilcotin. The Fraser Basin Council (FBC) Board of Directors has decided to invite a young person between the ages of 15-29 to participate on the Board, with the same input and responsibilities as the other Directors.
The Fraser Basin Council has had a Youth Advisory Committee since 2006, but has now decided to take it a step further---inviting young people to take a seat on their board of directors.
“It’s important for the Fraser Basin Council to have a youth voice,” said FBC Youth Programs Manager Amy Greenwood, “Without that, we really don’t have the broad input we need. The decisions we make today will have long-term impact on generations coming behind us---we want youth to actively participate in the decision making process.”
She said that the three-year Board position with the Fraser Basin Council would give young people unique, valuable and life-long experiences. “It will be an amazing experience for them to operate on a multi-stakeholder level—one that has been traditionally off-limits to them. This experience will build confidence, provide life skills and exceptional networking possibilities and will apply well beyond the FBC to their future career.”
